The Beginning
Joe Selinger immigrated to Canada in 1957 with a dream of importing top quality jumping horses and breeding them in Canada. In 1959, just two years after arriving in Canada from Germany Joe purchased 25 acres south of Calgary and started building his stable literally one fence post at a time.
The most commonly asked question we hear is “why St. George's?” So here is the answer: one of Joe’s first customers, a columnist for the German horse magazine, Sankt Georg, suggested naming his stable after the popular publication; thus, the birth of St. George's Stables, which has now been operating in Calgary for over 50 years.
In 1975 Frank won a bronze medal at the Pan American games and for the next three years he competed at Spruce Meadows on Canada's Nation Cup teams. Since those days, Frank has won 32 Grand Prix and has gained a reputation as an expert horseman.
As well as his exploits as an international competitor, Frank is a renowned international coach. He has coached the North American Young Riders Team, coached in Asia and Australia and spent four years coaching the Malaysian equestrian team.
Frank Selinger, Joe’s son, operates the riding school, while the breeding operations are still run today by Joe and his wife Edda Selinger under the banner J.E.S. Breeding Farm. www.jesbreeding.com Frank’s interest in horses began at a very early age and as a young man he went to Germany to attend riding school. After initial homesickness subsided, Frank knew he wanted to ride professionally.
Frank still coaches in Calgary and has been a part of the success of almost all the local professionals at one time or another. Frank is actively involved in the importing and exporting of warmbloods between Canada and Europe. Further, he is an integral part of breeding and training Canadian Warmbloods and Holsteiners alongside his father Joe Selinger and his wife Edda Selinger. The centrepiece of their breeding operation is the stallion, Carthago Sun I.
Frank’s latest passion has been to build and restore his jumps. His creations are unique and display his knowledge as both a rider and a horseman. All of these fine jumps will be in action at the St. George’s Derby Day held in July.
